So apparently, Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for the similarities found between the songs "If I Could Fly" and Coldplay's smash-hit single "Viva La Vida".

This lawsuit is pathetic. Like it actually angers me... and I can deal with fantastic musicians making stupid lawsuits (after all, I am a Prince fan) but this is just a low blow to Satriani's credibility as a person. It seems like he saw the youtube comparison and felt like he wanted to cash in on this coincidence.

The chord progression for both songs is incredibly common. Most musicians are aware of this would not make a big fuss out of it. The only two parties dumb enough to accuse Chris Martin of ripping them off are an unknown basement band and a musician whose ego is even greater than his abilities as a guitarist.

If you listen to the comparison, not only will you find that both songs are transposed to be in different keys in the video and that the similarity only lasts after... like 3 notes. It's nothing more than a passing similarity and I really doubt that Coldplay did this intentionally or had even listened to a random and obscure Satch track.

We'll see how this case ends up... I'm hoping it'll be deservedly thrown out of court.

Couldn't disagree more. Viva La Vida is a great album imo.
